The start of a New Year is a time where a lot of people commit to lifestyle and behavioural changes with the view to achieving these goals within a specific time frame. Fitness and inch loss goals are among the most common that people in the UK make and unfortunately the most common that people fail to keep. One commonly cited statistic shows that only 8% of people will stick to their New Years resolutions.
A healthy lifestyle is so important to our physical and mental wellbeing that we wanted to share with you our top tips for sticking to those New Year goals.
1. LESS IS MORE
Focus on one or two resolutions. Research has shown that our brain works much better when we are just focusing on one or two aims rather than a whole handful. Choose the one or two goals that you want to achieve the most and direct all your energy and focus into them.
2. SHOUT, SHOUT, LET IT ALL OUT
It’s widely accepted that you are far more likely to stick to your plans if you share them with selected friends and family. Whether you choose to use social media to do this or keep it more private you will be sure to have a greater chance of succeeding if you have the support and encouragement of other people.
3. BITE ME
Set yourself smaller, achievable goals on the way to your main goal. This way you will be able to chart your progress and see yourself attempting and more importantly achieving these smaller challenges which will help you remain positive, confident and focused on the main prize!
4. FAIL TO PREPARE, PREPARE TO FAIL
Preparation is key to success in anything in life and it’s no different here. If you’re committing to eating clean then clear out your cupboards, freezers and fridge of all the food you will not be eating in preparation for your first day. If you’ve decided to start a new form of exercise make sure you have everything you need already so there will be no excuse not to go for that run, cycle ride, gym session whatever it is you have chosen.
5. DAILY REMINDERS
Remind yourself of your goals and the reasons why you are aiming for them every day. Write this on sticky notes and place them round the house, set reminders on your phone and/or tablet, or get your support network to message you daily with your reasons why if you have a number of people supporting you then they can take it in turns to message you throughout the week.
You know those bite sized chunks we talked about? Well, each time you achieve one of those give yourself a little reward, it doesn’t have to be food or drink it could be a new workout top, a trip out, a new pair of trainers just something to acknowledge your progress and achievement so far.
7. BE KIND TO YOURSELF
There WILL be days where you revert to old habits, fall off your clean eating wagon, miss a day at the gym etc. The key here is to not beat yourself up about it and get right back on that fitness train tomorrow! Do not let one day mean you give up on your resolution completely. EVERYONE has days like that whatever they tell you!
8. DON’T GIVE UP
Most importantly of all is don’t give up on your goals, keep going and keep believing and remember you reach your goals by taking one step at a time.
